Fielding Lewis and the Washington Family: A Chronicle of 18th Century Fredericksburg

By Paula S. Felder

A young Fielding Lewis arrived in Fredericksburg to manage his father's store. Over the next four decades, Lewis would rise to fill all of the leading county offices.

George Washington, along with his sister Betty, grew up at Ferry Farm, across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg. As the two grew up, George quickly gained in prominence, while Betty became Fielding Lewis' second wife.

During the War for Independence, Lewis made great sacrifices to aid his brother-in-law and friend, Gen. Washington.

After the passing of Fielding Lewis, Betty was left to take care of her family in the new United States of America.
